A project should not be undertaken without a sponsor. A sponsor advocates for the product management constituency in the MSF Team model. A sponsor is responsible for providing the business case and finances for the project. The sponsor's input controls the governance of the project. The sponsor holds the business case and product vision against which the project governance is measured. Without a sponsor, there can be no governance.

A person assigned to this role should be added to the Reader permissions group. This allows them to look at the information that they need to perform their function.
