How to: Reassign a Bug

Description

Reassigning bugs is a typical action associated with the bug workflow. When a bug is active, it is assigned to a developer to fix. When the bug is resolved, it is assigned to a tester to verify. Bugs are also reassigned as a result of team activities, such as a triage.

Procedures:

To reassign a bug using Visual Studio

When reassigning a bug, be sure to include useful information about why you are reassigning the bug, and describe any actions you performed related to the bug while it was assigned to you. You can add this information to the history field as you reassign the bug.

  1. In Visual Studio Team System, open Team Explorer by clicking the View menu, and then clicking Team Explorer.
  2. In Team Explorer, expand your team project folder, and then expand the Work Items, Team Queries folders.
  3. Right-click the My Work Items query, and select View Results.
  4. Locate your bug in the My Work Items [Results] pane and select it.
  5. In the Assigned To field, enter the name of the team member to whom you wish to assign the bug.
  6. In the History field, provide details on why you are reassigning the bug, and summarize any actions you performed related to the bug.
  7. On the File menu, choose Save My Work Items [Results].

To reassign a bug using Microsoft Excel

If the bug is in a work item list in Microsoft Excel, you can use Microsoft Excel to reassign a bug.

  1. Open the spreadsheet containing the bug you want to reassign.
  2. Locate the row containing the bug you want to reassign.
  3. In the Assigned To column for the bug, enter the name of the team member to assign the bug to. Note: If the Assigned To column is not present, you can add it to the work item list.
  4. On the Team menu, click Publish Changes. This will commit the change to the work item database.
  5. On the File menu, choose Save.
